I did tell you when you signed up for this newsletter that I wouldn’t spam you. It’s been over a month since my last missive (a fancy, somewhat pompous way of saying “letter”… seriously, why not just say “post” like a normal person?), and I just wanted to give you a few updates.
Firstly, I have a prelaunch page up right now for CICADA SAMURAI #1. Please follow it! This was my first comic book creation - an immortal cicada (yes, the bug) with magical samurai powers, tasked with protecting his brood from the bloodthirsty Cicada Killing Hornet.
I will send a larger update with the full Cicada Samurai backstory closer to launch. For now, just know a few quick things:
I will not launch the campaign until the book is COMPLETE and we have 200 people following the prelaunch page.
Remember that you’ll get $4 off shipping because you’re one of my subscribers.
It’s violent.
It’s fun.
Takashi Okazaki (creator of Afro Samurai, current Marvel Comics creator on Star Wars: Visions) did the initial character design.
Mary Landro does interiors and covers, and she’s pretty awesome.
I have covers coming this issue from Walt Flanagan (TESD Podcast, War of the Undead, Knights of the Fifth Dimension) and Pablo Verdugo (Good Boy, TMNT, Mr. Beaver) as well as Mary and at least one more.
We were featured in INDIETOBER, a monthlong, character-drawing event on Facebook, which garnered a few really great and unique versions of the character. Some of my favorites below… click on the pics to find the artists’ instagram accounts:
It’s pretty cool seeing other people’s take on this character.
The holidays are close and I don’t expect to do another post before then, so Happy Holidays all!
Thanks for reading!
Jerry
The original design for Cicada Samurai is awesome (of course), but I love all three re-imaginings too! It's kinda cool that the character inspires so much creativity. Looking forward to #1.
