The CloakRoom - Happy Holidays
Scott Snyder Presents: The CloakRoom is back with a holiday issue, a storm delays my fulfilling a previous project, and chimneys suck.
Friends,
Our dear friends at Comic Impressions were hit by the hurricanes that were in the news recently. No injuries, and they were spared from the flooding, but they lost power for a fefw days and it put them behind. So The CloakRoom #2 is delayed.
This puts me in a bit of a spot, because we wanted to launch the third issue in the series, a Holiday Issue, in time to deliver the books before the holiday season comes to an end. We could have switched printers for one issue, but it also felt wrong to move business away from a company that’s dealing with a natural disaster.
So we’re doing the only thing I can think of, and launching issue #3 even though #2 isn’t delivered yet. I’m hoping to have #2 in hand next week and in your hands a few days later.
In the meantime:
It’s a holiday issue! It’s live NOW on Kickstarter! And remember as a subscriber you’ll get $4 knocked off whatever your shipping costs end up being!
***THERE ARE EARLYBIRD SPECIAL TIERS THAT WILL DISAPPEAR TOMORROW SO GO LOOK NOW PLEASE YOU CAN TELL I’M SERIOUS BECAUSE OF THE ASTERISKS AND BOLD AND CAPS SO THIS MUST BE REALLY IMPORTANT AND GOOD FOR YOU!***
Veronica and I (she’s my co-editor and partner on the project) are excited for this one. The series comes from the students of Scott Snyder. Every story is the brainchild of someone taking Scott’s writing class/workshop through his Substack, Our Best Jackett. (I highly recommend listening to the old classes if you decide to join). So for this one, we threw it out to the whole class that we wanted to do a holiday issue, but that we wanted to include any holiday the creators wanted. We got back Christmas stories, one Halloween story, two Passover stories, and one birthday story. Yes, birthdays count as holidays (according to my kids, and my sister, and my wife….)
We did three different cover options for this issue. I’m going to work backwards, so let’s start with the C Cover. Because we have two Passover stories, we made sure to have a cover that featured something more from Jewish culture. We didn’t want to be all pumpkins and jolly old elves. We asked Alex Schumacher, the artist for one of the stories inside the issue (Crime & Passover) to work something up, and I can’t say enough nice things about how much I love this cover. First of all, who puts speech bubbles on covers anymore? Who are we, Marvel in the 70s? I’ll tell you who does it - Alex. Colors by Ralf Singh:
Next is our B Cover by Xander Wise. Xander is a literal child. I think he’s 20 years old. He has no business being this good already. I hate him. He submitted 4 cover “thumbnails” which were all too good for someone his age. We’re holding onto 3 of them for next year’s holiday issue. For this year, we decided on his Christmas themed cover, twisted as it is. When you see it, you’re going to hate him too:
Do you feel that rage bubbling up? If not, you are probably also a talented child.
Finally, our A Cover, incorporating all the holidays in the issue, featuring a pumpkinhead writer on top of the contents of someone’s cloakroom (GET IT?!?!) with Santa, some elves, a birthday clown, and the Angel of Death all trying to claw their way to the top of the heap. Pencils and Inks by Jimmy Kucaj. Colors by Linda Campbell.

EARLYBIRD TIERS
There are 4 “earlybird” tiers that will disappear on Thursday midday. I’m going to feature just those tiers here for now because they’ll only be there another 24 hours:
OK that’s my pitch. Go look at the Kickstarter. It’s a cool series and I’m very proud of it and so is Veronica but she’s Canadian and nice so what does she know?
RECOMMENDATION
Quick recommendation here. A few of my indie creator friends created this very cool, twisted, shared universe about a hospice facility that specializes in evil people and the demons living inside them. They came up with this overall idea, and then they each wrote their own one-shot story about a resident at one of these hospices. This campaign is the collected trade paperback or hardcover. It’s SO GOOD. Dig it, then click it and take a look at the pretty, limited edition hardcover version:
FINALLY… CHIMNEYS
I just moved into a new house and we don’t have heat or hot water yet. They can’t turn it on because our chimney looks like this inside:
So in conclusion, chimneys are dumb and if not for Santa I would take a sledgehammer to mine.
