Those of you that came to me via my comics work may not know what my day job is - I’m an unscripted TV executive producer and showrunner. I’m in Florida this week at the tail end of the new project for Discovery Channel. Comic Impressions, my printer for all off my comics projects so far, is also in Florida and this week they printed the first issue of The CloakRoom. I took a 2+ hour detour to go pick up some of the books so that I can get a jumpstart on shipping them to my backers. Here’s what those GORGEOUS books look like all fresh and bagged and boarded:
Ain’t it pretty?
If you’re just filled with rage right now because you didn’t back the campaign and pick up a copy, you can follow the campaign for issue 2 which is going to launch VERY soon, and right that wrong:
While I there was picking up the books and throwing their organized shipping department into chaos (thanks again Carmen… and SORRY!) Rich Boye took me on a tour. The place is pretty great. Multiple buildings, different press options, digital, offset, and “digital offset”, which I had to have Rich explain to me.
Here’s the digital offset printing press. If you’ve had comics printed by Comic Impressions, chances are this is the monster that produced your book:
I saw a lot of Jimmy Palmiotti / Paper Films books in the works there, including one with a “spot gloss” feature that was pretty great. I also put hands on Comic Impressions’ “matte laminate” cover, the texture of which I really can’t even describe.
Look guys… I’m a nerd, so seeing this kind of thing was very exciting for me… you know that expression that no one wants to “see how the sausage is made”? Well I’m the guy that wants to see how it’s all made. I want to learn all about it even if I never really use that info ever again. It might come up on trivia night one day and then I’ll be prepared and you won’t.
OK - that’s the update. Comic Impressions was cool and the people are great, and The CloakRoom is shipping in the next few days!
Thanks for reading.
Jerry
Love Rich and the Comic Impressions team. They do great work!
Thanks for the tour! This is where "The Lump Sum Saga" was printed, so it is fun to see the motherland. :)
